In March you can hear the courtship drumming of the Ruffed Grouse. The male grouse chooses an opening in a swamp or forest and flaps his wings making a low thumping noise. It sounds something like someone trying to start an old tractor. The beats start slowly, and then speed up. (Birding by Ear: Disk 3, Track 3; Common Birds CD: Track 40) Listen
