Listen for Red-winged Blackbirds in wetlands in early March. The males arrive first and set up territories with their squeaky song: "oak-a-leeeee". The brown, striped females will come later to choose a nest site and become the mate of the male who "owns" the territory it's on. (Birding by Ear: Disk 2, Track 7; Common Birds CD: Track 39) Listen
